COMBATING ANTIGYPSYISM IN LOCAL STRUCTURES
Taking into consideration that the antygypsyism in local structures, also known as institutional antygypsyism, is demonstrated in different forms of resentment and rejection mainly due to stereotypes and prejudices towards the Roma individuals, the network will initiate different educational and advocacy activities for the staff and employees of local public institutions (schools, hospitals, ambulances, municipalities, local offices of different ministries such as employment, health, education, interior, housing etc.) and different governmental agencies working on local level.
As one of its most dangerous forms, the institutional Antigypsyism, founded on racial superiority and nurtured by historical discrimination, demonstrated by decision makers on local level is continuously keeping Roma away from public institutions and deepening their inferiority feeling. Access to quality education, quality services and participation in economic, social and political life is lacking as Roma are not accepted as equal citizens. Combating Antigypsyism in local structures should be considered as priority.
Influencing public policies is recognized as an urgent necessity. Increasing the influencing power of Roma civil society organizations over the local, national and EU policies is very much needed. Capacity building of Roma NGOs, Community leaders and Political leaders to drive towards securing strong advocacy over public policies is the main mechanism identified. Developing synergies between different forms of leadership will increase efficiency and effectiveness of actions and initiatives.
